Jarren addresses an old relationship he had where a girl left him and was apparently cheating on him. Still one of my favorite tracks despite being out for a while. Some semi-distorted strings with an occasional synth in the background. “I fuck you and then I put your dead body in a lake,” “My girl say her period is hella late, I got a home abortion kit we gonna get it straight.” What else do you want? He does bring up the Em (and I guess Andre 3000) comparisons saying it’s not exactly a bad thing since he’s living up to the comparisons. The hook has a nice little synth coming to the foreground as well. Nice beat on here with some cool staccato strings. The second half of Planet VI has a really solid third verse with a very solid flow. Jarren continues with his humorous lines: “The pussy can’t be real hairy, she look like Chewbacca with no clothes on, that’s real scary.” It’s more of the typical Jarren. One of my favorite beats so far and it has a great hook from one of the Planet VI members. One of the more serious tracks on the album. It’s a good message, but it’s a track that’s been done before and in a better way. There’s also a mention of him hopefully not losing contact with his closed ones as he tries to chase his dream. He also talks about his grandma a bit and her sickness. Jarren’s talking about his dreams (obviously) and talks about the things he’s seen or knows people have to do to make it out the hood. It starts off trying to sound really epic and heroic, but it’s kinda missing something. I’m not a huge fan of the beat or the hook. I’m not gonna pretend I know what the hell he was talking about. There’s also a beat switch halfway through each verse that’s pretty cool, introducing some nice keys in there. The strings during the hook make the track really epic. Kato laced this track with a BANGING beat. Kind of a slow start to the song as Jarren’s flow is really choppy, but he picks it up relatively fast and does his thing. Another solid Kato beat.Ī song to address the fakes and haters Jarren has encountered and continues to encounter. The beat and flow switch on the third verse give the song a good change of pace as it’s a little slower and Jarren continues to expand on his upbringing. Here he talks about his life growing up in Atlana and some of the mistakes he made as well as goals he wanted to accomplish. Jarren starts to show how well he can actually rap with a pretty quick flow. Now, I don’t know if this is a sample or Jarren or someone else did this hook, but it’s pretty cool. The hook really explains how Jarren must feel about some of his critics. He makes fun of his producer Kato for being Asian, says “the burn in my dick when I piss feels like a snakebite”. The album kicks off with a great example of what Jarren’s all about. Jarren’s grandma telling people to listen to the album.Ģ. You have to go in knowing what you’re getting into, otherwise he may come off as just someone trying to get attention through his outlandish lyrics. My Grandmas Basement is his Funk Volume debut and as a quick review for those that want a yes or no. You can see the Em influence but Jarren definitely adds his own twist. The Eminem comparisons have come in as well due to his lyrical content and it’s definitely not unwarranted. In my opinion, Jarren’s looking to make fun/hype music that makes people laugh at his ridiculous lines. He’s had the horrorcore/shock rapper label put on him, so take that however you want. He’s gonna say whatever is on his mind, even if it offends or makes you uncomfortable. Jarren Benton has established himself as a rapper who just doesn’t care what people think.
